Which digital signage screen is right for your venue?

Choosing the right digital signage screen depends primarily on Location, lighting conditions, weather, power supply and viewing distance from.

LCD displays with high resolution and moderate brightness are generally suitable for traditional indoor spaces. In bright entrance areas or behind glass, a significantly higher brightness is required. For unprotected outdoor areas, weatherproof displays with high brightness and an appropriate IP protection rating are required.

LCD or LED for digital signage?

Both LCD and LED displays can be used for digital signage. LCD offers high resolution and is particularly suitable for detailed content viewed from a short distance. LED displays can achieve very high brightness levels and are particularly suitable for high visibility and greater viewing distances. The specific location and application are always the decisive factors.

Where will the digital signage screen be installed?

Indoor, semi-outdoor or outdoor is the first and most important decision. Lighting and weather conditions determine which display solution is most suitable for the location.

SEMI-OUTDOOR

For bright, sheltered areas

Semi-outdoor displays are suitable for bright locations with plenty of daylight, but which are protected from direct exposure to the elements, such as heavy rain or snow.

COMMON MISTAKES

A display that is too dim may be almost impossible to read outdoors, despite good image quality. High display brightness is particularly crucial in direct sunlight.

02 · BRIGHTNESS

How much brightness does a digital signage display need?

The brightness of a display is measured in nits. The brighter the surroundings and the stronger the sunlight, the higher the display’s brightness should be.

INDOOR approx. 500–1,500 nits

For traditional interiors. In very bright indoor areas, a higher brightness setting may be advisable.

BRIGHT INDOOR AREAS / SEMI-OUTDOOR approx. 1,500–3,000 nits

For bright entrance areas, shopping centres, arcades and other locations with plenty of natural light.

OUTDOOR approx. 4,000 nits +

For outdoor use and locations with strong or direct sunlight.

Rule of thumb: The more daylight or direct sunlight hits the screen, the higher the brightness should be. The actual level required depends on the screen’s position, orientation and the local lighting conditions.

03 · INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PROTECTION

What IP protection rating does a digital signage display require?

The IP protection rating describes how well a device is protected against the entry of foreign objects, dust and water. The actual weather conditions at the installation site are the decisive factor.

IP43 is suitable for sheltered areas where the display is not continuously exposed to direct rain and severe weather conditions.

Mains power or battery?

For a permanent installation, a mains power connection is usually the simplest solution. A battery, on the other hand, offers maximum flexibility for mobile and temporary applications.

05 · VISIBILITY

Single-sided or double-sided display?

The key factor is the directions from which people are approaching the digital signage screen. In freestanding locations, a double-sided display can generate more visual contact.

06 · LED PIXEL PITCH

Which pixel pitch is the right one?

The pixel pitch refers to the distance between individual LED pixels and is given in millimetres. The smaller the pixel pitch, the sharper the LED image appears when viewed from a short distance.

P2.5 Short distance

Excellent image quality at close range. Suitable for digital signage, retail and high-quality presentations.

P3 All-round

Good balance between resolution and cost. Suitable for many indoor and outdoor applications.

P4 AND ABOVE Greater distance

For viewing from a greater distance, large LED surfaces, facades, large screens and event areas.

Rule of thumb: The closer viewers are to the LED screen, the smaller the pixel pitch should generally be.

07 · TECHNOLOGY

LCD, LED or OLED – what’s the difference?

LCD, LED and OLED differ in terms of their technical design, their brightness, image quality and potential areas of application. The right technology therefore depends on the application.

LCD displays

LCD displays use backlighting and offer high resolution as well as excellent display quality for text, images and videos. They are particularly suitable for detailed content and shorter viewing distances.

LED displays

LED screens consist of many individual LED pixels or LED modules. They can achieve very high brightness levels and are therefore particularly well suited to situations requiring high visibility, bright environments and outdoor applications.
